Packing Tips for Your First Visit to Cape Town

Cape Town is a stunning city. With Table Mountain as a backdrop, lush botanical gardens, and miles of ocean, once you have been to Cape Town, you won’t want to leave. It’s a beautiful place and a popular tourist destination for anyone travelling to South Africa, with plenty of affordable Cape Town Hotels. If this is your first trip, here are some handy packing tips to make sure you don’t forget anything.

What Season are you Visiting Cape Town?

Cape Town is warm and dry between October and April, so if you have scheduled your visit during Cape Town’s summer months, pack for a beach holiday. It can get a bit windy between December and February, but when the cloud lifts, expect hot sunshine. Cape Town winter is cool and fresh, but this is the perfect time for whale watching, hiking, wine tasting and cycling.

The Right Garments

Pack according to the season. In the summer months, beachwear is a must, as you can’t visit Cape Town without spending at least some time on the spectacular beaches. Pack a few layers, too, so if the temperatures drop or you take a hike up Table Mountain and low cloud descends, you won’t be too cold.

Hiking boots are essential if you plan on taking a few long, exploratory walks. There are some amazing hiking trails in the area and a sturdy pair of hiking boots will keep you safe and comfortable.

Smart- Casual

You can’t visit Cape Town without sampling some of the excellent restaurants and wineries. There are some amazing places to eat out in the city, so pack a few smart garments, but leave enough room in your suitcase in case you decide to pick up some bargains from Cape Quarter or Green Point Market.

Sun Protection

Don’t leave home without your sunscreen and sun hat. The African sun is very fierce, particularly during the summer months, so for anyone with pale skin, sunburn is a risk. Always put plenty of sun cream on exposed areas as you will burn within a short time without protection. Protect your eyes with a pair of good quality sunglasses. Lip balm is also a must-have. The African climate can be very hot and dry during the summer, so a quick smudge of lip balm will protect your lips from drying out too much.

Day Pack

Since you will want to explore Cape Town, take a small day pack in your luggage. This needs to be roomy enough to fit a jacket or sweater, a camera, and any snacks and drinks you might need. If you plan on doing some trail hikes, look for a day pack with padded straps, for extra comfort.

Travel Adapter

You’ll need a travel adapter to power your electrical items while you are in Cape Town. Most airports sell these, but it is always cheaper to buy a travel adapter before you leave.

Last but not least: pick up a guide book before you head off on your trip, so you know the best places to visit!
