If you are looking forward to an exciting Easter holiday in the family, you can consider switching your traditional Easter bunny costume for a getaway weekend in New York City. But before you jump on the next flight, you should maybe sit down and make a list of all the things you want to see. This is the best way to make the most of your time in New York. Between chocolate eggs and the Statue of Liberty, here’s how to make the most of your urban Easter vacation in New York City.

Plan Ahead

Nobody can repeat it enough: When you are planning a holiday abroad, and especially in the USA, planning ahead is key to enjoy a stress-free vacation. If you are flying from the UK, you will find plenty of flights for New York airport, with departs from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Aberdeen and even Cardiff. Make sure to check the difference between direct flights and flights with connections, as sometimes the trip will be cheaper if you agree to one stop on the way. One stop is fine as long as it is a short one that doesn’t happen in the middle of the night. The best way is to research your options online up to three weeks before booking. This gives you enough time to plan for price fluctuations and maybe to change the dates for a lower price. Start with the flight, and if you can choose to book the hotel at the same time. Once you’re done with getting to New York City and staying there, it’s time to ensure that you can enter the USA. UK travellers will need what is called an esta visa, which stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. You can register for it online for $14 for any travel and visits that are under 90 days. The ESTA is valid for a period of two years, which means that you can re-use it for further American holidays!

Don’t spend too much time on the Easter egg hunt, though, for there is a lot to see and do in town. Do take a stroll in Central Park before heading to the Metropolitan Museum at 82nd Street, for an afternoon of cultural wonders. Not your thing? Maybe take a boat to Ellis Island to climb on top of the Lady Liberty, the view is over the city is said to be breathtaking.
