Life can be hard. It’s a horrible fact, but one that is absolutely true. Life is hard and all the stresses and negativity that comes with it can make us feel stressed, out of touch and depressed with the way things are going. Some days are going to be better than others, of course, but in general it takes a lot to work hard and feel happy with who we are. Feeling good about yourself comes with a lot of practice, positivity and affirmations to ensure you can feel secure and ready to get on with your day.

The ways you can feel good about yourself will vary person to person, and it will depend on what you are unhappy about and how you feel. On the days that don’t go too well, we can be a lot harder on ourselves. There are several tools you can use to avoid being harder on yourself and instead manage to feel better, but unless you know those tools you cannot possible hope to keep moving forward. We’ve put together a list of ways you can feel good about yourself so that you can feel empowered and strong.

  1. Keep Going. Whatever life is going to throw at you, keep that chin up and keep walking forward one step at a time. A bad day doesn’t mean a bad life. The challenges and changes that get thrown up with life all the time shouldn’t be throwing you off track, and it’s up to you to keep yourself on it. Nearly every situation that makes you feel bad about yourself is a temporary one, and you can gain clarity about your situation by keeping focused on what’s ahead for you instead of what is happening right now.
  2. Be Healthy. Have you ever noticed that a sluggish and tired mood often exacerbates your depression? Looking after your health by eating better and exercising can make a difference to the way you feel within yourself. 1. Trust You. A lot of insecurities come from an inability to have confidence and trust in yourself. You should be believing in your inner resources to be able to have convictions in what you believe in. Always give yourself time and patience to work out whatever your issues are. Trust in your ability to be happy.
  2. Think Positive. Positivity is one of the biggest tools for feeling good about yourself. Being able to think happy thoughts like these is important for your wellbeing. You will never have thoughts that are 100% positive, there will always be sad ones that creep in. Owning those feelings, identifying how they make you feel and moving forward is going to help you go a long way to feeling good.
  3. Self-Care. Other than your health and exercise, you need to practice self-care. This is not just eating well and heading to the gym a few times a week, but taking time to centre yourself. This can come in the form of meditation and recognising when you are struggling and embracing that. Not pushing away the difficult situations in life and handling them is a way to exercise self-care.
  4. Small Picture. Everyone always says to look at the bigger picture, but for the purpose of feeling great, you need to look at the smaller picture. Small, little steps every day and small goals can really make you realise that the bigger picture is only relevant if the smaller one is being taken care of. By taking life one day at a time, and giving yourself smaller expectations, you can feel more accomplished. Smaller goals are often easier to handle, and this means you can feel secure in your everyday accomplishments.

Embrace Disappointment. Disappointment is a part of life, even though no one wants it to be that way. Recognising this can make you feel like you can use the disappointment you feel to get to the next big thing in your life. Even successful people feel sad and disappointed some of the time, but they’ve learned to harness that disappointment and use it to be more successful.

Life is hard, yes, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop feeling good and pushing positivity forward. Make the most of the life you have and embrace every feeling: you only get it once.
