Lauren Laverne Interview

Lauren LaverneStyleNest take five minutes out with the lovely Lauren Laverne to talk music, motherhood and Christmas movies.

From cult 90s Brit Pop band Kenickie to one of TV’s most recognised faces, a book series to a regular spot on BBC6 Music, Lauren Laverne is without a doubt one of Britain’s most talented ladies.

We caught up with Sunderland’s most famous export to talk motherhood, music and where she’s be doing her Christmas shopping this year.

You’ve recently been working with American Express. Tell us a little about that.

As the Amex Entertainment Insider, I’ve been taking a sneak peek behind the scenes of all sorts of culture and entertainment events. From the Summer Series at Somerset House to the BFI London Film Festival and the London Restaurant Festival, all of these are great examples of the cool experiences available to American Express Cardmembers. I’ve been getting the inside track from those who make these events happen and meeting the people, stars and talent involved. It’s been a lot of fun.

You’re a bit of a chameleon when it comes to work what with a spot on BBC 6 Music, writing, presenting, and you’re a mum. How do you juggle such a hectic schedule?

I guess the same way as anyone else, you just juggle and muddle your way through. My other half is brilliantly supportive, which really helps.

You recently worked at the BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express. Which films are on your must-see list at the festival?

Philomena was just fantastic, as was Captain Phillips and I’m really looking forward to seeing Saving Mr Banks.

What’s you all time favourite film?

It’s really difficult to choose just one, but I think I might go for It’s A Wonderful Life, especially at this time of year. It’s such a beautiful, humane film and brilliantly acted. Everyone in it is a bit of a genius, really, especially James Stewart. I love that he was a genuine war hero but always refused to play that part on film and instead created a very different, iconic hero in George Bailey.

You started your career with music in the 90s with band Kinickie and now have a regular show on BBC6 Music. Has music always been an important part of your life?

Always. I grew up in a very musical house so it’s always been a big part of my life.

Music is so different for children these days, what with shows like The X Factor. Do you teach your own kids about music and the artists you love?

I think it’s important not to impose your own tastes on your kids too much. I mean, the music I love is a part of their lives, it’s on in the house and everything, but I would never criticise something they liked, or demand that they only listened to my kind of stuff. They have to be allowed to be their own people.

What’s currently playing on your iPod?

Ooh all sorts of stuff. Some of my favourite albums this year include Agnes Obel’s Aventine, Who Is William Onyeabor by William Onyeabor, Lizzobangers by Lizzo, Arcade Fire’s Reflektor, San Fermin by San Fermin, UMO’s II and Big Inner by Matthew E White.

You’re regularly praised for your fashion choices. Who are your favourite designers?

I’m a huge Antipodium fan. I love Geoffrey J Finch’s wit and the subtly subversive aesthetic of the brand. But I also love the high street. I’m very keen to see what he does as the new creative director of Topshop.

We think you’re brilliant on 10 O’Clock Live, but is it ever tough working in such male dominated fields like politics and comedy?

The work isn’t made harder by my gender but I’m probably criticised differently because of it sometimes. Like most women I’ve come up against sexism in the workplace but not while working on 10 O’Clock Live. It’s a joy.

Which women inspire you?

So many women, too many to list in fact. My family and friends inspire me most – my Mam and her sisters and my Nan who had nine kids in a council house and no washing machine. And my friends, whether they’re writing books or at home bringing up their kids. But of course I also have tons of heroines from Rosalind Russell to Kim Gordon, and lots of male heroes as well. I think it’s important to have all kinds of heroes – men, women, animals… Toad of Toad Hall is a personal favourite.

Christmas is coming, where will you be doing your Christmas shopping?

It’s got to be John Lewis. I recently voiced their Christmas app, which is an audiobook about Bear and Hare from the new ad. I loved finding out the story behind the animation, much of which was done by hand.
