Jason GrantWe chat to the Sydney based interior and props stylist, Mr Jason Grant and author of A Place called Home and Holiday at Home/Away at Home to find out about the latest interior trends and tips on decorating your home on a budget.

What first inspired you to start working in the interiors industry?

I stumbled across the world of interiors and the magical job of a stylist. Growing up it wasn’t something I knew much about – I learnt a lot assisting a really great stylist and then went out on my own and have never looked back – hard work and a cheery attitude helps.

What’s the best way to get a designer home on a budget?

Know when to splurge and when to save. It’s important to think long term and know what to invest in and what not to waste money on.

What interior trends will we see emerging this season?

A new kind of minimalisim – it’s warm not cold, layered not stark and all carefully edited

Where do you find your inspiration? Is it people or places?

Nature and travel are my ongoing inspiration – I love to be inspired by where I am and what I see often in the everyday.

When you’re not busy working, what do you to unwind and relax?

I enjoy the outdoors, especially in spring/summer, yoga and meditation. Walking my dog helps to keep me sane.

It’s Spring clean time of year, any top tips for our readers to help clear the clutter?

Often it’s about the visual clutter – edit what you have out on display, make sure everything has a home and that everything is useful.

You’ve released two books, congratulations on your latest launch Holiday at Home! Can you tell our readers a little bit about the book?

The book combines my two favourite things: home and holiday. Really the book focuses on creating a relaxed home that you love and want to spend time in.

You’re known for a “less is more” philosophy. How do you think the interiors of your home effects your wellbeing?

There’s no doubt our surroundings affect us. Making your home a relaxed and comfortable place that you want to be in is a great start.

What advice would you give our readers who are decorating their first home?

There’s no rush – take your time and enjoy your decorating journey.

You live in Sydney but can you tell our readers any favourite spots you like to visit when you’re in London?

Favourite stores for interior inspiration and shopping are the Conran stores, Liberty, Paul Smith, Lee Broom, SCP, Good Hood and Labour and Wait. Spuntino is my favourite place to eat.

Do you have any space saver tips for around the house?

Think about things that have more than one use e.g. a side table that also doubles as a seat.

What advice would you give our readers who want to break into the interiors industry?

Assist a top stylist. We are always looking for another set of hands to help!
