Edinburgh International Festival

FFS © David EdwardsMuch as Edinburgh is a joy for the senses 365 days a year, there is undoubtedly something special and unique in August, as the world descends for the month.

The sheer volume of shows and activities is dizzying for grizzled local and first-time visitor alike, but every year the Edinburgh International Festival serves as a beacon for the very best in the arts, curated and showcased with vision and passion.

That is never truer than this year, as the inaugural programme under new Festival Director Fergus Linehan has been revealed. There are, as ever, stars and headline premieres aplenty, with such as first appearances from Juliette Binoche in Antigone, Lang Lang, Sufjan Stevens, Franz Ferdinand & Sparks, and many more.

Beyond that, the International Festival offers a peerless platform to engage and discover the arts in the heart of a vibrant city, with more than 2,300 artists form 39 nations calling Edinburgh home throughout, and visitors from more than 70 countries.

There is a balance between Scottish and International just as there is between heritage (with the 50th anniversary of the Festival Chorus) and the future, with a stunning array of new, commissioned work receiving global premieres, including Robert Lepage and Ex Machina, Amran Khan and Russell Maliphant.

From its opening with The Harmonium Project, a digitally animated artwork projected onto the iconic Usher Hall and set to music, to the internationally renowned fireworks which close it, The Edinburgh International Festival is a vibrant, inspirational celebration of exceptional theatre, music and the arts.

If you are able and inclined to be in The Athens of the North, browse the programme and get involved.
