Selfridges Big British Bang

Selfridges-Jubilee-CelebrationsSelfridges launch the Big British Bang to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics.

It’s safe to say 2012 is a landmark year for not only London but Great Britain as a whole, as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and London 2012 celebrations put the UK in the world’s center spotlight. To mark the occasions, iconic British department store Selfridges have launched their Big British Bang campaign – celebrating the best of Old Blightly from cups of tea to the love it/hate it Marmite.

Paying tribute to the festivities, Selfridges will be hosting in-store events, launching exclusive pop-up shops and treating shoppers to a number of patriotic surprises praising the weird to the wonderful of all things British.

Heading up the Brit Pack is Selfridges’ Big British Shop, stocking some of Britain’s most popular brands from Mulberry to Stella McCartney, a plethora of gift ideas and home accessories and even a few tiaras so you can pretend to be a queen for the day. As you’d expect the Big British Shop is full of Union Jack adorned bits and bobs, from an exclusive Mulberry Bayswater with Union Jack postman’s lock closure, to Barbour’s famous waxed jacket updated with a red, white and blue lining. For a subtler approach, Emma Bridgewater’s range of Diamond Jubilee table wear from eggcups to chunky mugs are a fun way to celebrate and remember this summer’s celebrations.

As one of Britain’s most iconic institutions in its own right, Selfridges have also launched The Big Yellow Shop celebrating that infamous sunshine yellow shade that adorns the store’s logo and shopping bags. The signature pantone has become as synonymous with Selfridges as the store itself, and so to pay homage to this, the luxury brand have teamed up with everyone from Dyptique to Illamasqua for exclusive collaborations all celebrating the summer shade. Choose from yellow nail polish to a pack of Selfridges pencils to indulge in a little bit of the store’s iconic history.

And finally, if shopping’s not on the agenda you can still get involved with the celebrations at Selfridges’ Big Britannica Exhibition, running from 4 May – 24 June in the London store. The fashion exhibition has been created by renowned curator Judith Clark and showcases some of the key styles worn by the Queen’s contemporaries between 1951 and 1953, reworked in their full glory. Iconic British milliner and Royal favourite, Stephen Jones has been recruited as the exhibitions main collaborator, creating a collection of exquisite hats inspired by the Queen herself and her coronation. The Britannica 1951-1953 exhibition really is a must-see for fashion fans and history fans alike. Visit the Lower Ground Fllor Ultralounge from 4 May – 24 June for a peek.
