New Year, New Hair

One of the most unwelcome side effects to having a baby is the toll it can take on your locks. My hair fell out thick and fast after having Lyla. With impeccable timing it happens somewhere between the realisation that you have lost the ability to shower in peace, AND the problem posed by not having any underwear that fits. Such a glamorous time.

By the arrival of Theo two and a half years later I was equipped for the challenge and armed with a hair loss defence kit.

The main components of this being;

  • Umberto Giannini Intense Beauty conditioner. This product is amazing, it smoothed out my tangled tresses and preserved the hair that was behaving itself.
  • Denman tangle tamer. Allowed me to brush through wet hair without losing huge clumps at a time.
  • Batiste dry shampoo. Fluffed out my barnet, giving the roots some much-needed va va voom.
  • Boots/Superdrug hair, skin and nails vitamins. Stopped me losing quite so much as first time round and helped new growth.

Each item listed made immeasurable difference to my ‘do, with normal services now (almost) resumed.  I was therefore more excited than usual to choose a suitable coiffure for my friend’s wedding last month.

I’ve recently discovered Newcastle based makeup and hair-styling specialists ND Makeup Artists who cover everything from weddings to commercial bookings, and they just so happened to be the Bride’s pampering team on the day. Marie from ND Makeup Artists worked wonders on my hair and I was more than thrilled with the result. By the end of the morning I’d had a right laugh getting ready and I was also set to debut a meaner mane than Rapunzel.

Wanting to replicate the look Marie had created I thought about heated rollers, before deeming it unrealistic. I would never manage such a process at 7am, even without the daily task of distinguishing my eye shadow from my blusher whilst simultaneously dressing 3 of us.

Sales shopping over Christmas I came up with the answer -John Freida’s ‘Hair Salon Shape Air Styler’. After using it once I described it to my sister as giving that ‘Cheryl extension wavy ends look’. You know what I mean… and it really does! A definite must-buy for 2013.

I still haven’t tackled how to have a child-free wash without getting up at 4.30am, but at least I can now leave the house with hair worthy of a member of Girls Aloud. My no.1 Mummy Mode achievement of the New Year, and I hope, the first of many.
