How to find the right bed for your child

Room To GrowHelping your child reach that all important milestone of sleeping through the night is a challenge that every coffee-fuelled parent can empathise with. So it is often with trepidation that you start the search for your child’s new bed, as any interruption to their sleeping pattern can spell disaster. That’s why finding a new bed for your child is an important process and there are a number of things that you should try and take into account when looking.

Safety

If your little one is transitioning from their cot to a ‘big kids’ bed then safety is important. You should make sure that both sides of the bed have safety rails ensuring your little explorer stays put and doesn’t slip out. These rails can be purchased separately but specially designed toddler beds often have this feature built in. Toddler beds are designed to be a transition bed. They have all the important safety features needed for a toddler; guard rail; low off-the-ground design, whilst allowing your child the feeling of independence that a big bed gives them.

Space

Sadly we cannot all live in huge mansions so often space can be at a premium, especially if your children need to share. So choosing a bed that not only looks great but also fits can be a challenge. Shorty Beds are a great compromise, they have all the features of a ‘big kids’ bed but without taking over the room. You can also purchase ‘grow’ beds that extend as your child gets older, a fabulous way to save space and money.

Cabin beds are perfect for older children. They are built further off the ground so have space underneath for storage or desks. For a little bit more fun they can come with tents underneath – a built-in den for your little one (or a space to store all their toys without anyone seeing the mess!)

Design

Let’s face it, most children know what they like (and they often aren’t afraid to let us know their opinions, very loudly!). So getting a new bed is the perfect opportunity to allow them to express their individuality and imagination. There are a vast range of beautifully designed themed beds out there, so whether your kids goes gaga for the Gruffalo, or are enchanted by a magic garden, there is a bed to suit their taste.

Personalisation

To make your child feel really special why not add a personalised twist to their new bed. If they are expecting a new sibling this might be a nice way to ensure they feel special whilst everything around them is feeling so different. You can get superbly crafted wooden beds with a name plaque either at the head or foot of the bed.
