Bringing a Little Extra Style to Your Compact Garden

Japanese GardenSmall gardens don’t have to be dull gardens. It’s possible to make a small garden look great, the same way it’s possible to make a large garden look great!

Dedicate a Little Space to Relaxation

Just because your garden is small, that doesn’t mean you can’t dedicate a little of that space to relaxation. When most of us step out into our gardens, we want to be able to feel at ease and relax. So, make sure you’re able to do this. You don’t have to take up the whole garden, but having a small dedicated to relaxation is a good idea.

So, what do you need in a garden relaxation zone? Well, first of all, you need somewhere to sit down and put your feet up. I’d recommend rattan sofa sets if you’re looking for style and comfort. Then you should think about where the relaxation zone will be. The quietest part of the garden is the best option.

Make Your Features Smaller

If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. But not many people do it. If you have a smaller garden, the things inside it should be a little smaller too. I’m not suggesting you should make a model village! But making sure that the features inside it are a little smaller than average makes the garden feel larger.

For example, if you have a small garden that’s dominated by one large tree, the garden will feel tiny. That’s not what you want. You should be trying to make sure that the garden is larger than it actually is. It’s not always easy, but it can be done if you put your mind to it and think outside the box.

Use Climbing Plants

Hard edges are never a good idea for compact gardens. You should do everything you can to avoid them. They tend to make a small garden appear even smaller by making it look boxy and squared. So, hide the walls and fence that you might have in place with plants, especially climbers.

These plants cover up hard edges and make the garden feel much more authentic and natural. It also gives the garden the appearance of more depth. This is because you can’t see exactly where the garden ends. All you see is a mass of plants and flowers. So, your imaginate creates more depth and size when you look at it.

Create Layers & Hidden Spaces

You can give a lot of extra depth to a garden simply by laying it out so that it appears that there are layers. That means you could arrange the plants and patio so that there is more space when you follow the path. Wind the path around the garden, through the trees and flowerbeds. It makes it feel much bigger.

Hidden spaces can be great fun too. You can shut off a little space in the garden that be found when you explore the garden. This is not only great fun for kids, but it’s also great for making the garden feel larger than it is. If a space is tucked away, it offers a new, unexpected dimension to the garden.
