London’s iconic Seven Dials is leading the way when it comes to new and exiting restaurants and bars. So, StyleNest took to the seven streets that neighbour Covent Garden, to try out some of its places to be.
The Seven Dials area of London was once an exiting array of boutiques, restaurants, hotels and shops. From Monmouth Street’s luxury lingerie boutique, Coco de Mer, to the Firmdale Group’s five-star Covent Garden Hotel; Seven Dials was enticing and delivered a less hectic, more stylish alternative to nearby and tourist-trapped Covent Garden.
Those much-loved brands, along with many others are still firmly in place, but it’s been quite a few years since the area has had a new and exciting buzz, whilst locations such as Soho and Shoreditch have led the way in London’s foodie revolution.
That is until now. In the past year, a wealth of restaurants and bars have popped up in the Seven Dials area, from Izakaya inspired eateries to Americana-Cool bars with cocktail menus inspired exclusively by 90s cult movies.
So, StyleNest headed to the WC2H postcode, to partake in a Seven Dials inspired ‘food safari’. Here’s what we found and the places you should be eating in this spring.
Flesh & Buns
From the people who brought us Bone Daddies, Flesh & Buns specialises in Izakaya cuisine. The idea is you order a range of sharing dishes from raw salads to crispy duck leg and crispy piglet belly, then build them up in traditional Japanese-style steamed buns. Washed down with their hard to beat sake menu, of course.
We thought we’d had good pizza until we tried Homeslice’s mammoth, NYC-style slabs. Tucked away from the main roads, Homeslice sits in pretty and pedestrianised Neal’s Yard. Special toppings of the day are available on these wood fired pizzas, but we say keep it simple and just go for minimal, fresh flavoured tops. Easily the best Margherita in town.
We topped off our food safari with one of the 90s inspired, movie-moved tipples at the Earlham Street Clubhouse. Above the bar hang the drinks menus, that can be pulled down on springs at your convenience. Each drink is named after a cult 90s movie or famous line from one, so choose from such classics as Stifler’s Mom, Rolling With The Homies or Axel Foley. A must for kids of the 90s.
Michelin-starred chef, Marcus Wareing is set to open his new venture, Tredwell’s in the Seven Dials area later this year, and there’s a number of London’s must-visits, including the renowned Hawksmoor and the coffee lover’s favourite, Monmouth Coffee Company.
Ape & Bird
Round the corner at the crossroads of Shaftsbury Avenue and Charing Cross sits Seven Dial’s latest resident. Once a well known spit ‘n sawdust boozer, this beautiful old pub has been revamped – decked out with on-trend suspended lighting, rustic exposed brick and stylish leather booths. Come in for a drink, Sunday lunch, or like us, their signature dessert, the Bannoffeebocker Glory.
