StyleNest visited the Breakfast Club in London for some good old-fashioned hearty grub.
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if like us you’re a sucker for some good old bacon ‘n’ eggs, then get yourself down to London’s Breakfast Club where they serve it up all day long.
With four locations around London – Angel, Hoxton, Spitalfields and Soho -The Breakfast Club’s American diner style restaurants have become somewhat of a cult classic amongst London’s trendy twenty-somethings, nursing their hangovers with brunch and serving them cocktails come evening. Given the popular locations, each diner gets very busy during weekends (we’ve seen a queue spill outside and wrap around the corner of the Angel branch) but during the day or on weekday evenings you’ll have a much better chance of getting a table.
With an eclectic mix of vintage Americana signage, neon lights, My Little Pony wallpaper in the toilets, and mismatched furniture, The Breakfast Club has a relaxed, kooky vibe. The menu reflects this, with American classics such as hamburgers, pancakes and chili bowls, as well as some British favorites like sausage or pie and mash. The food here is simple, but it’s not pretending to be anything else – just good old-fashioned comfort grub, making it the perfect place to take fussy little eaters.
StyleNest visited the Spitalfields Breakfast Club for dinner, just moments away from Liverpool Street station. Dressed down in t-shirts and Converse, the staff are all really friendly and relaxed, giving the place a laidback vibe. We sat down at locker room benches that had been cleverly converted into tables and chairs and ordered some starters – Chorizo and Lemon and Deep Fried Feta – which were both calorific but delicious. The starters here are huge so its probably best to share, or order them if you’re just popping in for drinks to keep you going.
For main we went for a Fish Finger Sandwich and one of the famous All Day Breakfasts (well it would be rude not to). You may want to order a side salad or something green to go with many of the mains on offer as they are all quite stodgy and really filling. But, it’s the breakfasts that are TBC’s real hero, celebrating the fact that it is always breakfast time somewhere in the world. Whether you’re a fry up fanatic, pancake mad or wanting something a little lighter like Eggs Benedict, the great thing about The Breakfast Club is that they serve it morning, noon and night.
If you can face pudding (we have to be honest, we couldn’t) the menu is sure to bring back memories of childhood and excite little ones. Banana Splits, Banofffee Pie, Ice Cream and Chocolate Brownies all make the list. We ditched desert in favour of a rumour that behind the diner’s retro Smeg fridge is actually a secret cocktail bar. We asked our waitress who confirmed the hearsay and we made our way through to what was a dark, speakeasy style bar. Obviously, if you’ve got little ones in tow the secret bar isn’t an option, but it’s a cool place to catch up with girlfriends midweek or pop in for a pre-dinner drink with your other half. Our grownup Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe moment really did make the evening, so it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area.
