As I throw my hat into the ubiquitous Father’s day gift guides in a better late than never style, I’d say that the smallest thing from the heart is what most dads live for every day.
At our best we’ve realised that our role is primarily as (key) supporting cast in other people’s lives, and that is the single best role we could have ever imagined, as they’re the greatest people we’ll ever have the sheer joy of sharing our lives with.
In the meantime, here’s some niceness.
I don’t want to overstate this but having one pair of sunnies is beyond a recipe for disaster. Hawkers offer a cracking range of lightweight, functional and stylish sunnies in a range of colours and styles at an amazing price point. Polycarbonate is tougher than tough and super light, while no metal parts make them almost 100% Dad proof, and Polarised lenses will mean he won’t have to pretend there’s dust in his eye when the youth are being adorable. Socks may seem to be a terrible present for any occasion. That is only true of terrible socks, and these are exceptional socks. So highly do I rate these tat I have written about them before, and have multiple pairs which I wear pretty much exclusively for 6 months or so of the year. Not just invaluable for stopping you looking like an archaeologist with short and trainers/ boat shoes, they’ll keep your footwear fresher than the rest of you. With rubber heel grips to ensure they stay of your feet, consider these the sock based boundary between civilisation and appalling savagery. The School of Life ostensibly exists to make our lives better, and there’s not much better you can say than that. These are part of a range of amazing books and cards which, beyond the initial appeal as an unusual gift, offer a substance and value just as great as the finest of Dads. This set can help him find calm amidst a sea of troubles be they real or imagined, and make everyone’s days that little bit more serene and enjoyable. It’s no secret I think that Champion is simply one of the most ubiquitous brands on the planet. Their reverse- weave sweats, and cotton t-shirts are benchmark staples in any wardrobe, and I seem to have inadvertently spent the last few years buying vintage NCAA Champion sweats and tees more than any other clothes. Such is my fondness, then, that their ongoing collaborations with American menswear designer Todd Snyder would have to go some to compete. Suffice to say they do, with a timeless aesthetic, and amazing quality. Their S/S collection is a perfect way to show Daddy you care, while ensuring that he fixes up his casual stylings. Big ups to John Lewis as well for rating their menswear game with a full collection. There are few things as baffling to me as why politicians never wear pocket squares. It’s like a bizarre become shorthand for being focused on more important things, and it’s wrong; I’d trust a better dressed elected official more than most. A great handkerchief, or pocket square can lift a great outfit and save a mediocre one, and they don’t come better than Drake’s.
