Casual menswear styles for a fitter 2016

House of FraserGetting physically active and healthy is an increasingly popular and very welcome trend amongst younger generations. These days, men are just as likely to hit the gym as they are to hit the pub. This has given birth to an active wear generation — men who want both style and utility when they’re working out. Here are a few active menswear staples:

Plain Tees

A t-shirt is an ubiquitous choice at the best of times, as it is a piece of clothing that can be styled in any number of combinations. For gym-goers, a t-shirt is a chance to work out in style without going full tank-top. Great for casual jogs, light workouts and some pre-gym coffee shops, grab yourself some plain men’s t-shirts today to keep your wardrobe versatile.

Tank Tops

They’re somewhat controversial but in warmer weather a tank top is a must. There are a few popular styles for gym goers, from the racerback to the full ‘stringer’ vest popularised by Australian bodybuilders. You’ll need to pick something that you feel comfortable in – don’t try and project or be something you’re not. Instead, wear something that will keep you cool when training without turning heads for the wrong reasons.

Slim-fit joggers

A growing trend, slim-fit joggers are a good choice if you’re heading to a city gym and want to hit the shops first, grab a coffee or head for post-workout eats. They’re a good blend of leisurewear and fashion and can be bought in lots of different styles to tailor to personal tastes.

Footwear

Unless you’re keen on pain, you should wear trainers with good arch supports when training. However, this only really applies to cardio and running. If you’re going to be weightlifting, you can wear flat-soled shoes to help with lifts like the squat and deadlift. White or black Converse All Star trainers are a great choice and look good with slim-fit joggers and a tee.

Hoody

A plain hoody is the ideal piece of outerwear for gym users. A hoodie can be good for keeping your physique under wraps until you’re comfortable exposing it but is also a handy way to stay warm without the bulk of a proper jacket. You can buy moisture wicking variants that pull sweat from your body and push it outside. Best worn in plain colours for a classic yet versatile look.
