As seen in the collections of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Topshop Unique; the Military Fashion Trend is back for AW12.
Military is one of those trends that perennially pops back every Autumn/Winter in some shape of form. As a British winter and the treat of chilly winds and lashings of rain set in, it’s a good job military is back as we wouldn’t want to wrap up in anything other than heavy, warm, man-like pieces.

This season the trend has grown up, with less emphasis on solider style lapels, garish buttons and high, dramatic collars. Instead the look should be paired back, relaxed, with a feminine edge. Don’t be afraid to introduce a skirt or unbutton a button-through shirt slightly as seen at Topshop Unique. Think off-duty officer rather than on.

The simplest way to work military into your look is with a great coat. Unique’s British-made, heavy trench is top of our winter coat list. Perfect paired with skinny jeans and a white shirt, or this season’s skirt of choice – the kilt, this coat offers multiple styling options. A cost-per-wear no brainer.
A high street favourite here at StyleNest, Cos seems to be getting it right season after season for simple, wearable but chic pieces. Pair this boyish sweater with a grey or navy skirt, ribbed woolen tights and a heeled ankle boot.
The Military trend is masculine enough so make sure you pair it with a heel to keep things chic and feminine. These Zara boots will see you throughout the season with skinnies, skirts and dresses.
Choose silk, fluid fabrics over classic khaki cotton for a more luxe edge, like this Equipment shirt. Tucked into a leather A-line skirt or grey woolen kilt, it’ll channel Topshop Unique’s AW12 aesthetic perfectly.
Elevate your look with MaxMara’s statement necklace. Layered over a grey marl sweater or with an open collar khaki blouse; this is the perfect accessory for a chic military look.
Designer of the moment, J W Anderson’s collection has gone down a storm amongst the StyleNest team. Grab a piece of Anderson’s carefree aesthetic with his Topshop diffusion line. We’ll be wearing ours with a chunky knit sweater and boyish biker boots.
Layer up your look with some chunky cable knit socks over thick woolen tights. Pick contrasting colours in muted colour palettes, think grey on khaki and vice versa.
