Wax In The City, London

Wax In The CityWith the ever-intimidating prospect of bare legs looming large, lots of us will be swiftly booking in for a pre-summer waxing session in the coming weeks

Fortunately, for those of us who aren’t quite so organised, London studio Wax In The City offers a walk-in service with a no appointments system, meaning we can become fuzz-free whenever we have a spare moment – perfect!

The modern flagship studio – based conveniently on Chelsea’s King’s Road – promises a simple but luxurious approach to waxing. Their exclusive ‘no strip’ warm wax can be used on even the most sensitive of skins, something that instantly appealed to this wax-wary StyleNest writer.

Wax In The City also has an impressive back story. Before the London parlour opened in October 2013, the brand had already proved a huge success in Europe. Christine Margreiter and Sibylle Stolberg came up with the idea in Germany back in 2004 and opened the first studio in Berlin a year later. The concept proved so popular that the company continued to expand and they now have 24 studios, with entrepreneur Marjorie Cusack opening the London branch 18 months after launching one in Dublin.

Excited by the prospect of convenience teamed with comfort, StyleNest decided to visit the London studio for our first-ever waxing.

We were warmly greeted by Marjorie upon arrival and felt instantly at ease in the cool décor of the studio. With all walk-ins catered for, the reception area has some cosy sofas with magazines and drinks available for those waiting to be seen.

Luckily for us we were soon called in by our Depiladora (this is cute term Wax In The City use for their specially trained waxing team) Beata, who took us through to a private booth and talked us through the process.

As a waxing virgin – barring a disastrous home attempt with some strips many moons ago – we decided to stick with a simple lower leg wax. Beata explained that our hairs were rather short (admittedly due to sporadic winter shaving), so we learned for future to leave them to grow for around three to four weeks and resist the temptation of the razor.

Despite this, Beata still managed to do a fantastic job of getting our pins as smooth as possible. First-time nerves were instantly dissolved when the process proved to be unbelievably quick and pain-free, with the only slight discomfort being the heat of the wax when it first goes on. This is only fleeting though as it soon solidifies before being removed in quick and painless motions.

Beata explained that the wax is applied twice to get a super-smooth finish and also revealed how the warmth of the product helps to open the pores, meaning the hairs will come out more easily. It’s also good to know that Wax In The City use a honey-based wax, which is soothing and nourishing for the skin.

After checking for any stray hairs, Beata advised about the aftercare (basically no use of any lotions or body care products with chemicals in and no exposure to sunbeds within 24 hours of the waxing). Wax In The City also has its own all-natural product line for further care, ranging from soft peels to a gel preventing ingrown hairs, which is available to purchase at the studio as well as via phone for postal delivery.

We were amazed by just how quick and wonderfully pain-free the whole process was, as we were in and out of the studio in under half an hour. It’s the ideal location for busy professionals or anyone with a hectic schedule just wanting a convenient but luxurious de-fuzzing session. It was no surprise to see several customers waiting as we left.

With services available for both men and women and with everything catered for, from brows and Brazilians to pretty much everything else, Wax In The City is the go-to destination for a smooth and swift waxing session at a time that suits you.
