Beauty Tip: Winter Skin

With the days getting shorter and the months getting colder, we often find our skin dry and dull over winter. As the temperature shifts, our skin becomes withdrawn and flaky with sometimes irritation and cracking. We’ve rounded up a few tips to combat winter skin.

StyleNest have teamed up with Clinique to bring you skin top tips to help you get winter ready and ensure your skin stays perfectly hydrated and full of lustre.

Tip 1. Dry Skin

Dry skin can cause your skin to look tense, tired and flaky. If your skin is lacking plumpness and luminosity as well as both feeling and looking rough then there are a number of causes. Genes, sun-damage, aging and climate are all contributors to the way your skin looks and feels Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator (£30) offers maximum nourishment in a cream-gel formula. It has a dual effect by offering maximum hydration as well as moisture barrier. For on the go, Moisture Surge Face Spray Thirsty Skin Relief (£18.50) quenches your face when your skin feels dehydrated.

If you’re prone to red and inflamed skin, then this can sometimes be attributed to genetics but if you are susceptible to outbreaks, a range of environmental factors could be the cause. Hot or cold weather, allergy or irritation, lingering in a shower or bath or being embarrassed or stressed can all bring on the unwanted redness. Use Redness Solutions Daily Relief Cream (£35) to relieve and soothe as well as minimizing redness. Redness Solutions Daily Protective Base SPF15 (£16) helps to shield your skin from environmental aggressors and prep your skin for makeup application or Redness Solutions Instant Relied Mineral Pressed Powder (£25) is a custom-made powder in a creamy formula which neutralizes the appearance of redness.

Dull skin is a result of lack of moisture in the air and decrease in oil on the skin. Without bespoke cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing, the amount of time it takes for our skin to shed can increase, resulting in a dull complexion. To improve the turnover of your epidermal turnover rate and for smooth and even skin tone with greater luminosity, exfoliation is the key. Use Turnaround Concentrate Radiance Renewer (£32) which improves the skin’s radiance by up to 71%. Finish with Overnight Radiance Moisturizer (£34) for a gentle exfoliation with moisturisation which results in a lustrous skin appearance and velvety texture.

Tip 4. Sun Damage

Even if you can’t see the sun, its still fundamental that you use sun protection to shield you from UVA (aging) rays which are present all year round. UVB (burning) rays are strongest in summer but the UVA rays are what can increase photo-aging. In winter, your skin cells don’t turnover at the same rate as summer which results in flaky and dull skin and wind dehydrates skin, further leading to cracked and chafed skin. For winter, use a richer and hydrating formula such as Superdefense SPF 25 Age Defense Moisturizer (£26) for daily age prevention and protection against aggressors such as sun and pollution.

Tip 5. Dry, Chapped Hands and Lips

Chapped skin occurs when the skin’s barrier breaks down, allowing irritants and aggressors to penetrate the surface. Aging, the environment, sun exposure, pollutants, dry air, air-conditioning and indoor heating are all factors which weaken the moisture barrier function which leave the skin feeling irritated and dry. To restore your lips use Repairwear Intensive Lip Treatment (£21) to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and protect against aggressors for smooth and kissable lips. For the hands, use Even Better Dark Spot Correcting Hand Cream SPF 15 (£22.50) to diminish dark spots and nourish dehydrated hands.
