Why you need an eye serum

If you’ve only just got to grips with using an eye cream, then an eye serum might seem like crazy talk. But don’t be scared. The delicate eye area can, just like the rest of your face, benefit from the kind of super-charge of active ingredients that a serum provides.

You can use them as an extra layer under an eye cream to problem-solve, or alone as a de-puffer. And as serums are so lightweight, they really suit this thin area of skin – doing their job without overloading or causing the kind of puffiness you’re probably trying to sort out. They’re perfect for summer too – and (whispers) mornings when you’ve had too much Prosecco the night before. Here are my top five.

My love affair with Elemis is eternal, and I am excited to hear they’re about to launch a new eye product called Pro-radiance Illuminating Eye Balm (£34). Before it becomes my new favourite, I’ll tell you about this serum: Pro-Collagen Advanced Eye Treatment (£41.50). This is a classic eye serum – packing an extra punch to bust lines and wrinkles under your eye cream, and my goodness it works.

From my new brand crush Oskia is Eye Wonder (£58). This is one of the new breed of eye serums: you can use it instead of an eye cream not under – it just has a lightweight, serum-like texture. But you won’t need anything else. This game-changer de-puffs, brightens, smoothes – I am actually thinking of proposing to it.

My go-to for a hangover is the more gel-like texture of Crystal Clear Intense Anti-Ageing Eye Serum (£35). I keep this in the fridge door and massage a bit on first thing, en route to the kettle. A serious bag-buster but with some intense moisturisation thrown in for good measure. Lovely.

Another morning miracle is Exuviance DePuffing Eye Serum (£59.50). This comes in a pen style format with three mini roller balls on the end – perfect for giving your morning peepers a massage as you apply this hard-working peptide packed serum.

Finally, for night time, my favourite is Aromatherapy Associates Firming Eye Serum (£41). You can use this with or without eye cream and I love its soothing, reviving effect. Layer on after a long day staring at a screen and you’ll wake up sparkly eyed.
