Shiny Happy People

When you’ve got curly or wavy hair like me, it’s hard to get a really glossy sheen to your locks. And it’s not just Mother Nature being mean. The twists and turns in each hair shaft stop the cuticles from lying flat – and it’s smoothed-down, overlapping cuticles that give hair its shine.

So I will never have a glossy mane. I’m OK with that. But I’m not going to put up with out-and-out dullness either. So here are my top five products for getting as much glossiness into my tresses as I can.

Klorance

I start with a shampoo that gives a really thorough cleanse and gets rid of the last lot of products I used. I absolutely love Klorane’s new Shampoo with Citrus Pulp (£6). Paraben-free and containing Corsican citron fruit, it refreshes, adds shine and smells zingy. You can use it on the kids too.

Ojon

My favourite conditioner for extra gloss is Ojon Rare Blend Deep Conditioner (£29). It has two ‘phases’ which squeeze out at the same time, one containing a blend of seven oils and butters. This is rich and – I save this word for special occasions – unctuous. The smell bizarrely reminds me of really posh furniture polish, but in a good way. Melts into my hair and leaves it smooth and obliging.

Ogario

When I’m in dire straits of dullness, I reach for Ogario Restore & Shine Hair Masque (£26.50). This brand is my new haircare crush: it’s an award-winning British range and all the products are packed with plant extracts and essential oils. The herbally smell of this is almost as divine as its cuticle-smoothing butteriness.

Joico

Post-wash, an oil is good for shine – I always apply when my hair is really wet though, to avoid greasiness. My current go-to is Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil (£16.95) because I’ve just had my hair coloured. Flat, dull colour is another enemy of gloss so a specific colour product is a good buy; I like this one as it has a non-sticky feel and a fresh, summery smell.

Schwarzkopf

If you’re blow drying, Schwarzkopf’s new BC Oil Miracle Volume Amplifier 5 (£12.75) is a godsend. Made with argan, marula, almond, macadamia and jojoba oils, it doesn’t just give a bit of shine, it boosts volume as you dry and even includes protection against heat – and glitter particles for extra light-reflectiveness.

Go on, get the gloss…
