Return to base

The wind is getting chillier, the light less warm and forgiving and the central heating has gone on. Although I love the change in seasons, these three things mean only one thing: it’s time to switch to a winter base. Cheerio, CC cream. Ta-ta, tinted moisturiser. Bye-bye BB. It’s autumn, let’s face facts, and I need something a bit more hard working.

And by hard-working, I mean with some extra benefits – and extra coverage. My skin has lost its summer glow so I want a bit more help, colour wise – and I’m also after anything that will boost radiance, plump, firm and add a bit of hydration. So here are my top five foundations for the coming cooler months.

First up is a thing of dewy beauty from bareMinerals: new bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation (£24). This has an amazing texture, and a host of skincare benefits. The superb brush it comes with makes sure it goes on flawlessly and it comes in not the usual five or six shades but twenty. Impressed.

Next up is Clarins new True Radiance Foundation (£27). Not only does it look super-glam on your dressing table, this is just ideal for winter – radiance is revved up by light reflecting pigments and you get 24-hour hydration into the bargain. Not that I would ever leave foundation on for 24 hours. Ahem.

Clarins

From Dr Lewinn’s is Skin Perfect Foundation (£25), which is my go-to when I’m needing a bit of youthfulness. It contains a lifting collagen boost and glow-enhancers for youthful looking skin – and a matte finish with a decent amount of coverage, which makes it perfect for winter nights out.

On a chilly day, I’m going to be reaching for Benecos Natural Creamy Make-up (£8.95). Purse-friendly, this is a gorgeous, nourishing wind-break for your skin, containing organic shea butter and sweet almond oil to keep dryness at bay, and plenty of coverage so that if you do get a touch ruddy of cheek, nobody will know.

Finally, from Laura Mercier is her new Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide (£34). This peach of a base is medium to full coverage with a natural matte finish, and, (perfect for showery British winters), it has a long-wear formula and is humidity and water-resistant.
