Nuts about coconuts

You’d have to have been living in a cave for the last couple of years to have missed the fact that coconut oil is being heralded as a kind of wonder-thing. I say ‘thing’ because not only can you use it for cooking, it’s also a phenomenal beauty product that works like one of my beloved multi-tasking balms – on hair, cuticles, hands, face, you name it.

So forget that horrible artificial coconut scent from the 1990s – the latest coconut products are packed with the oil itself. I’ve lined up my top five current coconut products for you, and there’s nothing remotely ‘Bounty’ about them…

If you are into the pure stuff, can I recommend Jax Coco Extra Virgin Centrifuged Coconut Oil (£14.99) – or EVCCO for short. The centrifuge process, which uses low heat, produces oil with the industry’s lowest zero peroxide (other coconut oils contain traces), and the most lauric acid, which has anti-viral properties. I put this bad boy on scrapes, cuts, eczema, and use it for frying and smoothies too. Amazing.

Now for something (a little) less pure. I have a right thing about foot creams that are minty. Why would you do that – who wants their feet to smell of toothpaste? Thankfully, Burt’s Bees have some sense and do a cracked heel busting, gunkily delicious Coconut Foot Cream (£12.99) with just a hint of rosemary and peppermint for the refreshment factor. Love.

For hair, my top coconut pick is from the amazing OGX (seriously, this stuff acts like it’s three times the price). Their Weightless Hydration Coconut Water Conditioner (£6.99) is perfect for when you have fine hair like me and want serious conditioning without the heaviness. Smells lush too.

For nuttiness on the go, I’m loving Sabon Vanilla & Coconut Lip Balm (£9) not least for the gorgeous little floral tin. The balm itself is super hydrating thanks to cocoa butter and shea butter alongside the coconut oil and you can take it anywhere you like.

Finally, a purse-friendly choice and a way to get some coconut into your life for under a fiver. Yes To Coconut Cleansing Wipes (£3.99) contain coconut water and kukui nut extract, and although I’m certainly no advocate of a wipe instead of cleansing, these make an excellent addition to an overnight bag. I’ve been known to use them on the kids too.
