It’s What’s Underneath That Counts

While researching this particular column I worked out that there are three possible reactions to using a primer. The first is “A primer? Isn’t that something that goes under my Farrow & Ball eggshell?”. The second is “Life is short: let’s get a grip, shall we?” And the third is “What kind of makeup moron would go without one?”

I used to be in the first camp, then moved to sit happily between the second and third. Yes, life is short, but primers aren’t just an extra bit of faff to add to your already faff-filled day. Pick the right one and your make up will go on better, stay put longer and you could get some skin-enhancing benefits into the bargain. Trust me. Here’s my top five.

The first ever primer I used was this: bareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer (£21). Some people aren’t that fussed about using primers with silicone in (and I’ll give you an alternative shortly), but I like the super smooth ‘wet but dry’ texture of it and the instant flawless base it gives, especially when you are using a mineral powder foundation like the ones bareMinerals do.

More dewy is the deliciously scented Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener (£35), which is so calming and nourishing you can also use it as a night-time treatment.

Sometimes if your skin is feeling dry, you can start applying makeup and it either sinks in, sits irregularly over dry patches or starts forming those little balls. My favourite primer if I’m all patchy and rough is Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer – Hydrating (£28). Great for stopping powder foundations looking cakey.

If you’d prefer to go silicone-free, Alexami Mattifying Effect Primer (£28.95) is from a lovely Australian brand which I really like the look of, and they have a certified organic collection coming soon. Dot this primer where you need it on shiny noses and foreheads. Smells yummy.

Finally, a little radiance: much needed in dreary old February. Your foundation might already have a bit of light-reflecting/luminous stuff going on, but a quick layer of Paul & Joe Pearl Foundation Primer Bon Bon (£23) gives an extra sheeny (but not glittery) boost to your maquillage. Life is short, so let’s look gorgeous for it.
