Don’t sweat the small stuff

Remember the old days, when you left the house in a cloud of Impulse ‘Suddenly Sassy’, and laughed in the face of both the ozone layer and the long-term effects on your pits of not allowing them to sweat? Good times.

Well, now we’re all much wiser, and it’s been proven that plugging up your sweat glands with aluminium is possibly not great for you. Who knew? So, I‘ve decided to ditch the anti-perspirants and use something as gentle on my underarms as I do on my face. Are you with me?

First up is Green People’s Natural Aloe Vera Deodorant (£7.95). This has the classic roll-on style and feels quite wet when it goes on, but dries fine and has no lingering stickiness. It’s aluminium and paraben free, and although it doesn’t stop you sweating, it smells lovely and has natural ant-bacterial properties to stop you getting pongy.

Also posh-smelling is Dr Hauschka’s Deo Floral Roll On (£11.95) – my choice for a post-shave deodorant as it’s slightly creamy and doesn’t sting in the slightest. The glass packaging is very ‘spa’ and it has a nice weighty feel to it. A favourite.

Free of all nasties like aluminium and parabens, it instead contains potassium alum salt crystals and chamomile. The crystals work by forming a thin layer over the skin, creating a salt environment in which the bacteria can’t live. Clever.

Finally, Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Roll on Deodorant (£4.95), which uses the naturally antiseptic properties of tea tree oil to fight odour-causing bacteria. Not one for after shaving, this is a bit stingy and has quite a ‘tea tree’ smell, which you will either love or hate. But, what is does do is keep you as fresh as a daisy. Low on sassiness, but a good pre-run choice.
