Brush it off

As much as I love a flannel, I sometimes feel the need for a little bit more. So if I’m not in the mood to exfoliate, and instead just want to feel my cleanser is working extra hard, I enlist the help of some battery power.

I was an early adopter of the Clarisonic brush but I’ve noticed recently a few more contenders popping up, so I thought I’d give them a try. And for the luddites amongst us, I’ve thrown in a ‘manual’ version too. Happy brushing.

First up is from No7: Beautiful Skin Cleansing Brush (£24.95). What a great buy this is – you could even pay for it with those points. I like the chunky handle, decent size brush head and two-speed function. And the results on my skin were noticeable after just a day or so – clarity, lack of blemishes and fewer ‘bumpy bits’.

Mary Kay Skinvigorate Brush (£35) is a compact little number, which is my choice for washbags. A smaller brush head this time, it banishes daily grime in no time – and apparently removes makeup 85% better than cleansing by hand. Nice work.

It’s always comforting when Clinique rises to the occasion and they have done so this time with their new Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush (£79). This isn’t just a rotating brush (hence the leap in cost). It’s a sonic brush, like the posh toothbrushes, and boy can you feel the difference. It’s got two bristle sizes, a tilted head, you name it in fact. And your skin will have that ‘just had a facial’ look after one use. Hoorah!

The new Foreo Luna (£145) doesn’t have bristles, but rather ‘silicone touch points’. The idea is that it’s super-gentle, more hygienic and gives you glowing, cleansed skin in just two minutes. It looks a little bit ‘bedroom’ on the bathroom shelf but you can maybe explain it to your friends in advance.

And finally, a purse-friendly option from Champneys. Their Facial Brush (£6) is perfect when you want to add a little extra oomph to your cleanser but without the rotating (and the price). This is my favourite choice of ‘manual’ brush as it’s got bristles that are soft but not too soft, and a decent size head. Much like my husband in fact.
