All That Shimmers

Shimmering is not something I would normally aim for. It’s not very school-run. It would make me stand out a little in the chilled section of Waitrose. And frankly, it sounds a little time-consuming. But I’ve been converted this summer by the new generation of shimmering body oils.

These are not glittery. They just give a gorgeous sheen to your limbs, perfect for adding a glow to fake tan, making your calves more daylight-friendly or throwing into your washbag for those holiday evenings. And this isn’t just makeup, it’s a nourishing body product too, so you’ll wake up the next day with a mojito headache but very soft skin.

Caudalie’s Divine Legs (£26) was ahead of its time and is still my go-to when I want to wear a knee-length skirt and I’m looking for a quick fix for pasty pins. This doesn’t just give a sheen – it has a tint too, and can look a bit scary at first before you blend it. Once you do, you’ve got legs that look curiously like someone else’s – in a good way.

New from Moroccanoil is Shimmering Body Oil (£37), which has that same gorgeous argan scent as the rest of the range – what made me love the hair oil so much. This doesn’t disappoint either: a non-greasy, glow inducing oil which makes you feel sun-kissed even if you were in the office all day.

Purse-friendly in the extreme is M&S Limited Collection Shimmering Body Oil (£7.50) – a great way to try out the style of product if you’re not convinced. I absolutely love the smell of this, it’s really summer evening, and if you put it on all over you wouldn’t need perfume too.

Equally good value is Champneys Spa Indulgence Mediterranean Bliss Shimmering Body Oil (£10). This is probably the most shimmery of the bunch, so perfect for evening and my favourite when I’ve got a bit of shoulder or arm on show. Contains sesame oil for extra moisturising punch.

Finally, Thalgo, who can do very little wrong in my opinion, have created Polynesia Sacred Oil (£26), which uses good old monoi and is apparently inspired by Maohi traditions. What I love about it is the oh-so-subtle sheen, the ‘hardly need any’ richness and the scent, which is what I’m hoping this entire summer will now smell like.
